REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Sun., July 23, 2000

This legendarily lost Polish film has been revived through the efforts of Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, who picked up the torch carried by Jerry Garcia, who always cited it as his favorite film. He was in good company: Luis Buñuel also loved The Saragossa Manuscipt. The three-hour movie is frequently described as a Chinese box of imaginative stories within stories based on an early 19th-century novel by Jan Potocki. Advance tickets to this rare archival screening are available by calling the Alamo at 476-1320. For more on the movie see the story in this week's Screens section.
