North by Northwest

North by Northwest

1959, NR, 136 min. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, Jessie Royce Landis, Martin Landau, Leo G. Carroll.

REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Tue., Dec. 28, 1999

One of Hitchcock's very best comic thrillers, North by Northwest features scene after unforgettable scene – including the ones of the crop-duster chasing Cary Grant and the Mount Rushmore sequence. This 40th anniversary print of the movie was recorded with Dolby Digital Stereo. Although the movie was recorded in stereo, it has only played in mono until now. Also, on display in the Paramount lobby will be digital facsimiles of screenwriter Ernest Lehman's shooting script, detailing the crop-duster sequence; the exhibit is courtesy of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at UT.
