Three Lives and Only One Death

Directed by Raúl Ruíz. Starring Marcello Mastroianni, Anna Galiena, Marisa Paredes, Melvil Poupaud, Chiara Mastroianni. (NR, 123 min.)

Not reviewed at press time. A longtime international arthouse and festival favorite, the often enigmatic director Raúl Ruíz (The Golden Boat, Three Sad Tigers) has yet to achieve popular success. His latest film, Three Lives and Only One Death, may help to change that situation. The French-made film features one of the final performances of screen icon Marcello Mastroianni, who stars in the movie's quartet of stories loosely derived from familiar urban legends. Individually, the quirky tales are playful puzzlers; they collectively interlock to create an allegory about modern European unionism.
