Common Ground: The Music Festival Experience

Austin could not be a better home for this exhibit focused on the history of music festivals. Artifacts and concert footage bring the experience alive whether it's Hendrix at Monterey or Queen at Live Aid - both featured in a video montage of the Top 10 festival performances of all-time. Artifacts include Muddy Waters' '59 Martin acoustic played at the '68 Newport Folk Festival, a poster board stenciled sign by Banksy, and Dave Navarro's Jane's Addiction stage getup. Curated by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. March 10-July 23, Mon.-Sat., 9am-5pm, Sun., 12-5pm. $9-13.

Heart of Texas Rockfest

Pride & Joy: The Texas Blues of Stevie Ray Vaughan

Stevie Ray Vaughan fans will not want to miss this exhaustive exhibit guest curated by his brother, Jimmie Vaughan. Many of Vaughan's guitars (including his legendary "Number One" Fender stratocaster) will be on view as well as early family photos, concert posters, stage outfits, handwritten lyrics, exclusive archival concert footage, his famed hat, and more. Purchased Lives: The American Slave Trade From 1808 to 1865

This exhibit examines "the lives of individuals intertwined in the domestic slave trade by exploring slavery’s reach beyond New Orleans and Galveston, beyond Texas, beyond the South, and into the very fabric of America." Through July 9. Cost of museum admission, free for members.

SXSW Gaming Expo

The gaming arm of the SXSW Fest is back but a little different this year. There will be the usual panels, cosplay competitions, parties, and of course, games, but it's not free like it has been in years past. The kids will likely stick to the pro-gaming tournaments, virtual reality rigs, and other flashy bits. Parking Downtown will be limited (and/or expensive).
