Austin Film Society: The Creative in Crisis: 8 1/2

Mastroianni plays a film director who's just had a huge hit but is struggling to find an idea for his next project. Between fits and starts, he goes back through his life and confronts all his demons. And what a cavalcade of demons! This new AFS series has been curated by the Chronicle's Kimberley Jones, who will present each film. For more on the series, see "The Pen May Be Mightier Than the Sword, but Sometimes It Makes You Want to Slit Your Wrists," p. xx. Read a full review of 8 1/2.

    • OUTsider: MayDayGayDay!

Austin has a new queer fest launching February, 2015. Come see a taste. (See how we did that?) Similarly, on this gay May Day, local artists will tiptoe through the tulips of art forms not often associated with them. PJ Raval shall dance. Unabashed Ursula shall mime. You hear the picture. Also, they offer rides (We guess?) on a thing called the Rough Rider, which we really, really hope is Paul Soileau on his knees giving piggyback rides. 8pm. $5 donation.
