Just beyond the fringe of Eastside gentrification, the aptly named Frontier Bar rises as a neighborhood venue not yet overrun by tourists. For this grimy, unpretentious local bill of Trophy’s expats, they host country kinfolk the Ghosts of Texas, apocalyptic space punks Solid Goat, and Wiley Ross of Street Light Suzie’s new group, Dragon Blood. Closing the night, my junk-food-eatin’, accordion-squeezin’, rural-punk mindfuck band, Cunto! – that’s me on mandolin – which continues its assault on decency with a recent vinyl offering. Finally, a good band from Austin!
– Kevin CurtinAustin post-punk counts tree rings inside this unrelenting triple stack. If the headliners don’t ring a cracked bell, let the support tip you off. Nazi Gold’s all-star clang – the Dead Space’s Quin Galavis, Flesh Lights’ Jeremy Steen, and Thor Harris (Swans, Shearwater) – match up with the wickedly spasmodic When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth spin-off Spray Paint. Both pay dividends to senior noiseniks Craig Clouse (Todd, Shit and Shine) and King Coffey (Butthole Surfers), whose thunder trio throttles indie rock pretentiousness. Mirror Travel first.
