  • Heather Woodbury: As The Globe Warms

One of the most amazing theatre artists to ever set foot in this city returns to the Vortex with a new story – an American soap opera in six parts – and a whole new cast of characters, all played by Woodbury herself. Witness this creative powerhouse of a woman, directed by Michael Yawney, as she explores and explodes the headlines of our times with endangered frogs, whirling dervishes, desperate scientists, and evangelicals gone wild. Through Nov. 11, 8pm. Part Two: Thu., Nov. 1; Fri., Nov. 2. Part Three: Sat., Nov. 3; Sun., Nov. 4. Part Four: Wed., Nov. 7. Part Five: Thu., Nov. 8; Fri., Nov. 9. Part Six: Sat., Nov. 10; Sun., Nov. 11. $10-30 (but ask about those VIP passes!)

  • The Encyclopedia Show: Railroads

Hosts Mike Graupmann and Ralph Hardesty present another info-packed slate of heady entertainment, this month investigating the iron horse and the changes it brought to a burgeoning nation. Joining the regular gang of wit and wisdom this evening are guests Spike Gillespie, Anis Mojgani, Nina McConigley, and the Alamo's Lars Nilsen(!) More fun, we reckon, than Casey Jones with a steam-powered catheter. Thu., Nov. 8, 8pm (2012), $6

  • Women & Their Work: Violent Delights

Ann Wood's fantastic art incorporates two- and three-dimensional pieces – entire taxidermied deer, for instance – into a rococo outcropping of landscape that references topiaries, floral bouquets, and pastry decorating. But, note: The death and decay lurking below the surface or hovering nearby is, you might say, more than just the icing on this complex cake. Recommended. Through Nov. 17.
