The Octopus Project has a busy 2012 in the works: a film soundtrack, a new album, and the explosive quartet’s relentless pursuit of spreading big-top electro bomp far beyond Austin city limits. Live music photo site Vivogig scored South by Southwest Interactive points by uncorking the Octos along with fellow local electronic enthusiasts Fresh Millions, Sphynx, and Art Versus Industry. Octopus Project tries out new tunes and video setups that debuted last month. – Abby Johnston
When Dick Clark called music the soundtrack of our lives, he probably didn’t imagine someone screeching into a microphone over a sonic wall of discordant noise loops. Some would argue that there’s more art in experimentation than in faithful representation of an already established form. Take it from local musician Anne Heller, organizer of the annual Yeast by Sweet Beast, a three-day celebration of improvised experimental music. The event, in its 12th year, features 36 acts including psych institutions ST 37 (as Scottless & Bible Black), Jerri Seinfeldt’s Atrophied Sac, and Book of Shadows performing over three days in three venues with video accompaniment.

Here's a show of such number, such diversity of talent, you'd need a dozen hands to count all the artists represented. But, luckily, you need only one method of transportation to see the goodness – small, medium, and large creations – on display. Dig it: New works by Rhody Adair, David Alcantar, Ines Batllo, Paul Beck, Sabra Booth, Tyler Butcher, Javier Lopez Cantu, John M. Carpenter, Thomas Cummins, Bryce Dishongh, Audrey Fox, C. Ellen Hart, Nancy Hoover, Erika Jaeggli, Alison Jardine, Nicole Jeffords, Eve Larson, Ellen Llewellyn, Shanny Lott, Marilyn Rea Nasky, and so many more! Through March 11. Lytle Pressley Contemporary, 1214 W. Sixth.
The man who most famously – besides his many other tropes and triumphs – joined typography with paintings found at thrift stores to brilliant effect is celebrated with an exhibition, "Beauty is Embarrassing." During the reception, he'll be signing copies of his new book, Maybe Now I'll Get the Respect I So Richly Deserve. We should paint this word in warped wood-grained letters of three dimensions: RECOMMENDED. Through April 19.

Not even South by Southwest can completely overshadow the other big party in town. As if the cattle-roping and bull-riding weren't enough, there will also be livestock contests, a barbecue cook-off, a carnival, and enough kid-friendly events to keep the ADD at bay. Oh yeah, artists such as Bret Michaels, Josh Turner, Demi Lovato, Glen Campbell, and many more will take the main stage. Go to
www.rodeoaustin.com for a complete list of events or to buy tickets and just follow the big, gleaming belt buckles.
Through March 24. Fairgrounds admission: $7 ($4, children); carnival: $32 (includes fairground admission); rodeo and concert: $37-175 (includes fairground admission).
