First Place: "Fayette"

Burke Nixon was born in Houston and graduated from UT-Austin. He and his wife currently live in Oxford, Miss.


Second Place: "May the Passenger Pigeon Sing Thee to Thy Rest"

Perry Tyson Midkiff II has a handsome dog called Wallace. When he is down, he reads Jim Harrison. When not selling tacos on the Eastside, he writes screenplays.


Third Place: "Speechless"

Work by Benjamin Reed has appeared in Blue Mesa Review, The Southern Quarterly, Sou'wester, sub-TERRAIN, and Farfelu Magazine. He's twice been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and formerly was a columnist for Austinist.com. He lives in Austin, where his family settled in the 1800s.


Honorable Mention: "We Are So Invisible Together"

Jessica Rutland is a recent graduate of the University of Texas, where she received her degree in English. She lives in Austin, works two jobs, and writes in her spare time.


Honorable Mention: "Bandera County Driving Lessons"

Paul Slavin grew up in California and received his Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from Mills College. His stories have appeared in 580 Split, Potatoeaters Quarterly, and Fan Magazine. He now lives in Houston and has two young daughters.
