* THU, JAN 9: Naomi Bennett will speak about her book, Passion, Attraction, Astrology and You at Book People at 7pm... Simultaneously, Book People also will host Bert Pluymen as he signs and discusses his The Thinking Person's Guide to Sobriety.
* FRI, JAN 10: Daniel Quinn will come to Book People at 7pm to promote his new book, The Story of B.
* SAT, JAN 11: Local author and translator Marian Schwartz will read from her latest translation, Dina Rubin's On Upper Maslovka, at Book People at 7pm. The novel is only available on computer disk, and disks will be available at the reading.
* TUE, JAN 14: Walter Cronkite -- yes, that Walter Cronkite -- will sign copies of his new book, A Reporter's Life, at Book People, 7pm.
* WED, JAN 15: Barnes & Noble will host Cook Elementary School students as Booksellers for a Day, wherein children will learn what life is like in a bookstore as they assist with storytime and tour the store. The program, 9am-noon, is part of the Austin Adopt-a-School program.
* ONGOING: Drawing and Crossing Boundaries: The Roots of Texas Music is the name of a free symposium at Southwestern University in Georgetown Jan. 30-Feb. 1. The conference will examine four musical traditions -- Tejano, Anglo, Euro-Ethnic, and African-American -- through lectures and performances. Featured participants include UNO professor of folklore (and former Austinite) Nick Spitzer, UT professor Manuel Peña (author of The Texas Mexican Conjunto), Tulane University professor and author of Country Music USA Bill Malone, SUNY professor Charles Keil (author of Music Grooves), and UH professor/poet/critic Lorenzo Thomas. The Austin Writers' League (AWL) is taking entries for two awards programs. The Young Texas Writers' Scholarship program is open to Texas High School students, awarding 12 scholarships in the areas of poetry, short story, essay, and journalism. The Teddy Book Award is a $1,000 prize for the best children's book written by an AWL member. Authors may join the AWL at the time of entry. Entries are due by Jan. 31. Call 499-8914...
