So this is how the 2011 season ends for the freshly minted Best of Austin winners. In the red corner, the Rhinestone Cowgirls want to finish a perfect season with the championship held high. In the green corner, 2010 champs the Cherry Bombs will want to give retiring veteran Honey Homicide the farewell she deserves – one where she gets to skate out the door with the Calvello Cup.
The Lonestar skaters return to their old home at Austin Convention Center, 500 E. Cesar Chavez Hall 5. Tickets $15; $13 from a vendor, $10 from a skater. Doors 6pm, first whistle 7pm. Visit www.txrd.com for more info.
The 2011 home season is over for the Texas Rollergirls (who know a thing or two about winning a BoA themselves.) But that just means they are bearings-deep in the Women's Flat Track Derby Association's tournament season. Last weekend the traveling Texecutioners pulled an astonishing fourth quarter rally in Kansas City to win the South Central regional's Show Me Der-B-Q. So start saving now for a ticket to Broomfield, Colorado for the Continental Divide and Conquer WFTDA nationals, Nov. 11-13.
Winning regionals also gives them a significant advantage – a first round by. That means they will face the winner between North-Central number two seeds the Minnesota Rollergirls and number three in the East, Baltimore's Charm City Roller Girls. Visit www.texasrollergirls.org for more info.
There will be one more bit of traveling for an Austin skater this year. Smarty Pants (the first skater to ever transfer from Lonestar to the Texas Rollergirls) made the cut to join Team USA at the first ever Roller Derby World Cup, being hosted by Toronto Roller Derby and Blood & Thunder magazine, Dec. 2-4. She and her team mates will be in the mix against squads from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland and Sweden.
Speaking of Team USA, their captain Suzy Hotrod from 2008 WFTDA champs the Gotham Rollergirls made another major step in mainstream media acceptance of Roller Derby when she was included in ESPN magazine's body issue.
