If this were a regular Derby weekend, the news would be about the Texecutioners' East coast double header: But first, we have to talk about the Jr. Derby heading to the gulf for their own travel bout.

Jr. Derby

Head trainer Mary Lou Threaten is taking the Austin ages 10-17 team to Corpus Christi this weekend. It's not just a trip to the beach: Tonight they will be scrimmaging against the Sparkling City Rollerdollz. This bout is open to the public, so if you feel like hopping into the car you still have time to see the 2009 Best-of-Austin-winning Jr. Derby. The bout starts at 5pm tonight, May 7, at Rollerjam Sk8Town, 2001 Saratoga, Corpus Christi. More details at www.sparklingcityrollerdollz.com.

There are currently 65 peewee derby leagues internationally, some independent like the local Ann Richards Roller Girls, others directly affiliated with adult leagues. The Jr. Derby has scrimmaged regularly with the Ann Richards skaters, but this is their first ever full travel bout.

The Austin Jr. Derby is currently finishing out its Spring session: For girls interested in taking up the world's fastest growing women's sport, there will be boot camps across the summer before a new session starts in the fall. Texecutioners

The Texas Rollergirl's travel team are looking for blood this season, and this weekend may be the perfect way to start it as they head to the East Coast for two bouts. 2010 was their worst interleague year to date, but tonight they aim to continue this year's perfect 7-0 record with an away win over the Philly Rollergirls' Liberty Belles. The two teams last clashed at the 2008 Women's Flat Track Derby Association 2008 nationals, and the Texies are looking to erase that night's 114-95 loss. The real test may be Sunday, when the Texies try to crush the memory of their 2010 defeat at home at the wheels of Baltimore's hard-hitting CCRG All-Stars. The Charm City skaters are currently #10 in the Derby News Network power rankings, with Texas two places behind at #12. A Texies' win this weekend will send a powerful message before their triple-header across May 20-22, when they face the three power houses of the Pacific North-West: The Oly Rollers, Rose City and Rat City.
