The Texas Film Hall of Fame has just announced its 2013 inductees, and the new names stretch from childhood heroes to Oscar nominees and beloved character actors. Actors Henry Thomas, Robin Wright, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Annette O'Toole all enter the hall, while Dazed and Confused receives the Star of Texas award for its 20th birthday
At this morning's announcement at the Austin Studios, Austin Film Society executive director Rebecca Campbell called the hall "a showcase of the extraordinary talent that comes from the state of Texas, a celebration of the film community that's grown up in Austin and is known the world over as a supportive haven for creativity, and a fundraiser that sustains the Austin Film Society's year round work."
The fundraising comes from the gala presentation where all the nominees will be in attendance (plus there's room for some unannounced special surprises.) Scheduled for March 7 (the night before SXSW Film 2013 opens), will take place at the studios with a red carpet cocktail reception, seated dinner, award ceremony and after party. Dazed and Confused director/AFS co-founder Richard Linklater called it "a big cultural event" that helps keep the Texas Filmmakers Production Fund afloat. Over the years, the fund has given out $1.2 million to Texas film makers, and this year there are 10 projects at Sundance from current and former fund recipients. Linklater said, "It's very important in an artist's life that they get that support from someone."
More on who's being honored this year:
Henry Thomas: Elliott from ET: The Extra-Terrestrial was the ultimate wish fulfillment character of every lonely 80s kid. Unlike many child prodigies, the San Antonio-born Thomas has continued as a great supporting actor, starring in headline projects like Gangs of New York, All The Pretty Horses, and the Polish Brothers upcoming adaptation of Big Sur as the Zen acolyte of the Beat movement, Philip Whalen.
Robin Wright: Forever in many hearts Princess Buttercup from The Princess Bride, the SAG and Golden Globe-nominated Dallas native has had a busy couple of years recently, with roles in the David Fincher version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Conspirator and Rampart, plus a return to the Fincher fold in the eagerly anticipated Netflix adaptation of British political drama House of Cards.
Stephen Tobolowsky: The definitive "oh, THAT guy" character actor of Texas cinema. Probably best known as the annoying Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day and Ku Klux Klan boss Clayton Townley in Mississippi Burning, Tobolowsky has recently starred as Stu Beggs in Californication, as well as appearing alongside Thomas in The Last Ride. But the truth is that he has 200-plus roles under his belt, and a career that has seen him work with everyone. Tobolowsky will be introduced by his Pope Dreams co-star and friend Julie Hagerty of Airplane! fame.
Annette O'Toole: Another heavyweight with beloved genre performances on her resume (first as Lana Lang in Superman III, then as Martha Kant in the long-running Smallville.) An Emmy nominee for her performance as Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy in The Kennedys of Massachusetts, she's also an Oscar nominee for 'A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow', the song she co-wrote with her husband Michael McKean for A Mighty Wind.
Dazed and Confused: The quintessential Texas coming-of-age movie. Star Parker Posey will accept the award, with director Richard Linklater and other members of the crew and ensemble in attendance.
