Feeling patriotic? Feeling like doing the right thing and adopting an animal in need? Want to merge those two fabulous feelings into one? Over the long weekend you'll have two chances to do so – while saving money at the same time. Now if that isn't the American way, I don't know what is.
On July 2, the
Austin Humane Society will hold its holiday
Prrrrice Is Right adoption event. The busy kitten season has kept the shelter full; on Saturday, from noon to 7p,
nearly 100 kittens will be available for adoption. The prrrrice, you ask? Why, just $5 for kittens, and free for all cats over one year. That price (five smackers or free) will get you up-to-date vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, microchip implantation, a free month of pet insurance from
ShelterCare, and more! (The first 50 adopters, we're told, will also get a free 7-pound bag of litter.)

If Saturday doesn't work for your busy weekend schedule, never fear! On July 4 you can roll on over to the Town Lake Animal Center for a special holiday adoption extravaganza. TLAC, the city's shelter, is hosting an adoption special on Monday from 11:30a to 5p at the West Cesar Chavez Street shelter, where all animals with red, white, and blue bunting on their cages will be adoptable for just $4! But wait! There's more: That four buck fee includes spay/neuter surgery, microchip implantation and up-to-date vaccinations. Now that's a deal.
