The five-way split of Travis County in Congressional redistricting passed out of Senate committee today.
About an hour ago, the
Senate Redistricting Committee passed a redistricting plan that sticks it to Travis County by splitting us up five ways, with Travis constituting a majority of the population in none of the five. On a statewide level, minority activists – especially Latinos – claim the plan violates the Voting Rights Act.
If you can stomach it, the plan may be viewed at the state's
DistrictViewer site. Select PlanC136. See previous blog and
Twitter posts for local reactions and the effects it may have on Travis County. (The map shown here is a close-up of the Travis County portion of the map.)
The Senate is in recess until 3pm Monday, so no Senate vote on the map (Senate Bill 4) until then at the earliest.
