Today, City Manager
Marc Ott announced Austin Energy's new general manager will be
Larry Weis. He'll take over recently retired Roger Duncan's position on Sept. 27.
Weis is leaving his job in California as the general manager and CEO of Turlock Irrigation District. In his new position, the GM will earn a salary of $285,000 compared to the $277,188 he currently earns at TID. Ott has been focusing on Weis – who has over 28 years of experience in the electric power and water utility industries – as a top candidate for the last couple of weeks. See Nora Ankrum's
Austin Energy Sets the Curve for more on the recent hiring process and the challenges Weis will face when he takes over.
Austin Energy currently gets about 10% of its energy from renewable resources, and part of Weis' job will be setting the utility on the path to reaching its goal of 35% from renewables by 2020. Weis will also implement Austin Energy's first rate study in 16 years.
In a statement, Weis said he believes "as the Austin community gets to know me, they'll be assured that Austin Energy is in good hands."
