Why Pie?

Given last night's all-star Hey, Loretta! Hillbilly Hoedown and Pie Social at the Continental Club, the proceeds of which benefited the SIMS Foundation, I looked up the history of pie socials to see how they developed. Finally! Something Wikipedia has no entry for! Read More | Comment »

Born Traveler

The email, as often happens, came forwarded to me through close connections. “Since her diagnosis of ovarian cancer and, also, with four other doctors in Houston, Traci Lamar Hancock decided to accept the help of hospice in her home.” The email continued. Read More | Comment »

Doobie Brothers: Rockin' Down the Highway

Early summer 1971, the Doobie Brothers toured Texas for the first time, driving their own Winnebagos. In San Antonio, they played Freeman Coliseum between locals Giant Smiling Dog and Tracy Nelson & Mother Earth. Four decades later, led by original guitar/vox combo Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston, they play ACL Live at the Moody Theater tomorrow, Tuesday. Read More | Comment »

SXSW Encore: Eric Burdon

Eric Burdon never let his career get in the way of his musical vision. From classic British Invasion chartoppers with the Animals (“House of the Rising Sun”) and later War (“Spill the Wine”), to the modern Animals (including local drummer Brannen Temple), Burdon is still sharp, relevant, creative, and inspired 50 years after breaking out of North England. Natalie Zoe's Birthday Bash

Happy birthday, Natalie! Hope you don’t mind me plugging your CD release for The High Road this Friday, Feb. 24, at the Saxon Pub by also mentioning your Big Uh-Oh Birthday Bash. Grounded in Commitment

If the names Jack Ingram and Grounded In Music sound familiar, it’s because the 2012 Benefit Concert at Gibson Guitar Showroom on Wed., Feb. 15, is the second time the two have associated for the cause. This year, he’ll be joined by Hayes Carll, with Savannah Berry and Grounded in Music students. Read More | Comment »

The Girls on the Bus

Weekday morning sounded the same as I boarded the bus during third grade in 1962, down in the desolate suburbs of southeast Houston. We lived so far out of town, the road into my subdivision was a one-lane shell road and horny toads ran free in the vacant lots. Today, Sabo Road has its own exit off the Sam Houston Tollway and horny toads are on license plates. Read More | Comment »

Sh*t Austinites Say

Yeah, yeah, tardy to the party, but this video made me and dozens of other folks laugh on Facebook this morning. What was intriguing though was the ubiquity of South by Southwest references. The phrase not in here is, “I’m having a showcase at my house.” Read More | Comment »

Chris Gray Fundraiser

We in the print media are a dwindling fraternity, bolstered by our peers in radio and TV, publicists, and those internet comrades in arms, bloggers. Bottle of Wine

It sits on my shelf gathering dust, a bottle of Rolling Stones wine from my editor Raoul Hernandez. Not opening it is a kind of symbol for me, but nothing overly spiritual or meaningful. It’s just a collector’s item, and not to be tampered with. Read More | Comment »

The Ageless Climate of the Rock Star

Something about December evokes nostalgia like no other month, so seeing Dangerous Toys on the calendar for this Saturday, December 3, at the Red-Eyed Fly only amps up the sentiment. 1987 was a good year for Austin's Toys, who signed with Columbia Records for their eponymous debut.
