SXSW Adds to Music Roster

October has been a busy month for South by Southwest. The organization executed the inaugural South by South Lawn at the White House, their environmental conference SXSW Eco wraps up today in Austin, and now it’s time to share their first big list of Music Conference artists.

Among the 156 acts set to perform in Austin March 13-17 are indie math rockers Minus the Bear, Canadian R&B minimalist Charlotte Day Wilson, Algerian desert groovers Imarhan, indie pop group the Drums, and Tommy Stinson’s post-Replacements alt-rock group Bash & Pop.

Other notable artists on the early roster include Pro Era rap crew founder CJ Fly, lo-fi folk songwriters Girlpool, electronic R&B artiste Autre Ne Veut, ’Bama rockers Lee Bains III & the Glory Fires, and Blackbear/Mike Posner collabo Mansionz. Also slotting into the festival: bilingual, sax-fueled political punks Downtown Boys, indie pop duo Pure Bathing Culture, garage-rock songman Ron Gallo, Sub Pop signees Lvl Up, young Houston rappers Trill Sammy and Dice Soho, lunar post-punks Meat Wave, and bluesy screamers 4onthefloor.

From Latvia to London, the fest always draws heavily from an international base, so global acts stamping their passports in anticipation of the March melee include Cuban rapper/songstress La Dame Blanche, Scotland pop-punk favorites Paws, Finnish pop singer Alma, Aussie guitar-pop group Thigh Master, Tel Aviv-based Arab/African trad music twisters Yemen Blues, English electro-pop balladeer Sohn, Mexico City stoner rock duo Cardiel, and German pop artist Roosevelt.

Thirteen acts pull from Austin’s crowded music scene, most famously southern rockers Band of Heathens and platinum rock/pop hit-makers Fastball. Other local acts on the docket: David Ramirez, Blind Pets, Whitney Rose, Moving Panoramas, Blue Healer, Lincoln Durham, Emily Wolfe, William Harries Graham, Missio, Tamarron, and mouthful act Letting Up Despite Great Faults.

Expect roughly nine more batches of lineup announcements between now and March, with the most famous acts being unveiled shortly before the festival hits. Artists interesting in throwing their hats into the spring scrum, make haste. The deadline for SXSW submissions ends October 21.
