Golden Girl
Erin Ivey's latest LP, which I reviewed here, was a grower. Ultimately, I had to give her props for trying so many different genres (reggae, folk, jazz) and making it work. Catch her at Waterloo Records, 5pm today, before she's the next big thing.
Austin Chronicle: Are you a reggae fan?

Erin Ivey: I love reggae, and I'm getting deeper into dub at the moment. Working with the Finest Kind has been amazing, to blend my little folk songs and white girl voice with this massive groove-driven R&B/dub sound.

AC: I thought of "Go! Go! Go!" as sort of a modern woman's mantra. How do you interpret it?

EI: I wrote "Go! Go! Go!" for encouragement. At a basic level, it really is about making up your mind every day and going for it, and I love that the rapper, Mic Flow, took a day off from his ridiculously demanding medical residency up in Fort Worth to lay down his track.

AC: Did you approach Broken Gold from a different viewpoint than 2007's debut?

EI: In 2007, I figured that if working in a cubicle was going to kill me, I'd rather die making music. So, I moved to Portland, Oregon, because it sounded pretty, found some folks, and made The 11th Floor with no money. Since then I've played over 300 shows across the U.S., written a ton of songs, made two EPs, and gotten to work with supertalented musicians, engineers, and producers who have influenced and inspired me.

But, the biggest difference, and the best part about this new album, is that over 200 fans pre-ordered it before it even existed and raised almost $15,000 to help make it happen. So, I was making it for them.

You know, the more I think about your question about "Go! Go! Go!"... It's more like a seeker's mantra. The closer you live to the edge (of psyche, of poverty, of anything, really) the more conscious and intentional you have to be just to survive.
