The healthy fast food chain Chipotle Mexican Grill espouses the concept of food with integrity. What does that mean? It means the company makes an effort to find "the best ingredients raised with respect for the animals, the environment, and the farmers." It also means they support and attempt to sustain small farmers. That's where Urban Roots comes in.
Urban Roots is a local organization that uses sustainable agriculture to transform the lives of at-risk youth in Austin while helping to increase the access to healthy foods here. You may have shopped at their booth at the Downtown Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings or attended one of the chef's luncheons they host at the farm every year. If you've met the kids from Urban Roots or tasted their organic produce, you know the program grows winners.
For the second year in a row, Chipotle has chosen to partner with Urban Roots, making them a beneficiary of a $10,000 donation day from Chipotle outlets in the Austin area. On Thursday, Feb. 21, Austin-area Chipotle Mexican Grill locations will donate all proceeds up to $10,000 to Urban Roots.
The money will support educational farm tours for student groups from grade school through college. Students who participate in the tours to the Urban Roots property (7651 Delwau Ln.) will learn about the benefits of sustainable farming, making healthy food choices, and then get to sample fresh vegetables grown by Urban Roots young farmers. All you have to do to support this invaluable community resource is buy a healthy burrito on Thursday. Now that's food with integrity!
