FronteraFest: The Basics

By Robert Faires, January 10, 2014, Arts

Twenty-one years in, I expect you know the who-what-when-wheres of this winter wonderland of original performance, but a brief review is never out of place.

The Short Fringe Five weeks of short-form works, each 25 minutes or less, with four or five pieces each night for five nights each week. Tuesdays through Fridays, you get five premieres; Saturdays the cream of the week's crop are reprised in a Best of Week show. The fifth week features pieces judged Best of the Fest. Jan. 14-Feb. 15, all shows start at 8pm at Hyde Park Theatre, 511 W. 43rd.

The Long Fringe Two weeks of long-form works – 30 to 90 minutes – presented in rotation: two a night Mondays-Thursdays, three a night Fridays, six between noon and midnight Saturdays, and five between noon and 10pm Sundays. Jan. 20-Feb. 2, all at Salvage Vanguard Theater, 2803 Manor Rd.

Mi Casa Es Su Teatro One Saturday devoted to site-specific performances in homes and businesses around town. Each year, the mix is curated by a different artist or team of artists, and this year it's director Rudy Ramirez, with assistance from Cassidy Browning and Kyle Zamchek. Saturday, Feb. 8, 11am-7pm, at various locations.
